About Granite

Granite’s durability and beauty makes it a top choice for countertops.
With a permanent and substantial look, granite countertops add elegance to your home.

Granite counter tops have natural strength and come in a variety of colours.
However, choosing granite poses significant challenges.

Although in some cases granite counter tops can cost a little more than solid surface counter tops and require some maintenance, they offer unrivaled, one-of-a-kind beauty to any kitchen.

Granite has existed for thousands of years. Along with marble and natural stone, granite is formed under the earth at the compression of heat and fusion.

It is an igneous and metamorphic rock which is resistant to extreme temperature, stress and heat.

It is smooth and cool to the touch.

Granite Prices: From R1450 per square meter.

Aquire nature’s beaty at a Lower Price

On a tight budget?

Don’t count granite countertops out yet. There are many strategies you should consider if you want granite but think you may not be able to afford it.

Have granite installed in square pieces, not as one solid piece. This gives you the same natural beauty but for a much lower cost than solid stone while also making repairs easier.

Granite varies in quality. Factors such as country of origin, colour, veins or patterns, thickness of slab, amount of soft minerals in the stone, and current fashion trends can impact prices of granite.

If in need to save money, choose a low-cost type of granite.

Paying attention to the number of seams and cuts that will have to be made in granite slabs can help you keep the price to a minimum.

Hire professionals. Failing to properly set a granite counter top can create an extremely expensive mistake to fix.

Caring for your granite surface

Clean granite surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap ( available at hardware stores ) or a mild liquid dish washing detergent.

  • Rinse well with warm water.
  • Use a soft cloth for best results.
  • Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks.
  • Do not use products that contain lemon, vinigar or other acids.
  • Rinse the surface thotoughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Change the rinse water frequently.
  • Do not use scouring powders or creams, these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.
  • Blot a spill with a paper towel immediately.
  • Don’t wipe the area, it will spread the spill.
  • Flush the area with plain water and mild soap and rinse several times.
  • Dry the area thoroughly with a soft cloth. Repeat if necessary.

Pros and Cons of Granite

Pros

Granite countertops don’t depreciate in value.
It’s a one-of-a-kind, natural surface that has an almost luminous look.
Granite adds value to your property.
It’s sanitary, bacterial contamination is not a problem with granite.
Formed by heat and pressure, it can take the heat of a pan.
It’s easy to clean with warm water and a mild detergent.

Cons

Granite countertops last forever. If you get tired of the colour, you’ll either need to learn
to live with it or rip out the entire surface because you can’t change the colour.
Each slab of granite is different, so it may not be a good choice if you prefer a completely uniform look.
Granite can be permanetly stained if you seal it with a preexisting stain.
It can crack when hit a hard, sharp object like a meat cleaver.
Because it’s so heavy, granite often requires additional structural support.
